What or where exactly is the lake district

March 2, 2008

The spokesperson for a new “where to stay” guide proudly trumpets that “it is the only one of its type that profiles tourism businesses based only in the Lake District rather than the whole of Cumbria”.

I can’t but believe this is unhelpful when Cumbria as a whole rather than the lake district needs all the tourism money it can get and the fact that we have the Cumbria Tourist Board rather than the lake district tourist board.

It also raises the subject of what or indeed where is the Lake District?

Do we restrict the area to the boundaries of the Lake District National Park? To do so would exclude Ulverston,Penrith and other towns which are essentially Lakeland towns.

Should we not instead promote Cumbria as a whole,so that the entire area can benefit from any promotional activity that gives a boost to our region?

I believe so and that is why www.discoverthelakes.co.uk does not discriminate by excluding the areas outside the “lake district”.
